Forgiving others is hard; it’s often easier to hold on to anger. The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant reminds us that to receive God’s forgiveness we must forgive others—if we withhold mercy, God will withhold it from us.

Peter thought his question showed his readiness to forgive, yet Jesus revealed that Peter’s understanding was far too limited compared to the complete forgiveness God demands.

In the parable, a man forgiven of a huge debt later refuses to forgive a very small one owed to him. His master, enraged by this lack of mercy, demands full repayment. Jesus warns, “Thus my heavenly Father will treat you unless you truly forgive from your heart.”

This teaching shows that genuine forgiveness must be heartfelt. Failing to forgive causes inner pain and torment—a reminder of our sin and God’s call to let go of bitterness.

Today, as we remember Saint Maximilian Kolbe, take time to reflect on your call to forgive fully. If resentment still lingers, keep praying, refrain from judgment, and forgive again and again to open your heart to God’s abundant mercy.
